I have a gigabit internet connection and I'm planing to use about 10% of it for I2P. Is there any downside to increase the number of tunnels to 8 or higher and hops to 4?

more hops, more latency, potentially slower.

the speed of any given tunnel is as fast as the slowest participant. more participants (hops), more chance of slowdown.
