There is no such disgrace on ilita.

Hello i2p team, i've been thinking about Laptop Mode. I think the option currently, gives the the network information. Eg when I have used a 2nd IP address, the port number at the first ip address changes. This allows a large network operator to infer that I used i2p somewhere else. I think it can probably just randomize port everytime i start i2p. I have not noticed any major issue doing this.
joan
Thanks for voice, dr|z3d
dr|z3d
*thumbs up* joan. well done for registering, and welcome back.
joan
:)
dr|z3d
as mentioned before, laptop mode will kill your participating tunnel traffic when you ip changes, and you'll be a new, unknown router on the network. randomizing your port would work better, no doubt, because you retain your router id.
joan
There's a router id?
dr|z3d
your id is your router hash (public key), which changes when your ip does if you run laptop mode.
RN
due to new laws about adult content, your router has to prove it is over 21 years old
RN
XD
RN
just kidding
dr|z3d
it's funnier when you don't say "just kidding" RN :)
RN
yeah, but I don't know how new joan is and didn't want to be too confusing
joan
lol
RN
😈
dr|z3d
joan's so new she still has the peel on.
RN
welcome joan, think we said aloha before
joan
yes, hi again.
joan
okay so what do you mean by "randomizing your port would work better, no doubt, because you retain your router id" there are times when I go back and forth between places, I don't have an isse with Laptop Mode
dr|z3d
You were talking about poor participating traffic previously. And then you mentioned laptop mode. This is why.
joan
Maybe 24 hours after creation the port can be burned on restart???
joan
As I said in the PM things are much better since fixing my firewall.
joan
Thanks again, publicly, for that.
dr|z3d
OK, good to hear. But do bear in mind that when your id changes, it will take days to get back up to speed, participating traffic-wise, usually.
joan
what I'm saying is if i connect for a day at another place, then when I return to place 1 the port changes and so it can be inferred that I have been to another place.
joan
that's how it works currently
dr|z3d
well, no, not really, not for laptop mode.
dr|z3d
because when your ip changes, so does your router id.
dr|z3d
(as well as your port)
dr|z3d
if your main ip is static, then, sure, there's an issue of correlation between port change and same ip.
dr|z3d
if your main ip is static (or long-lived), then, sure, there's an issue of correlation between port change and same ip.
joan
ok cool, looks like you understand :)
joan
so yeah, anyways thats my 2 satoshi for the day, i'll try to be online for a while tho
dr|z3d
run znc, you can be online all the time your router is, even when you're not present. better for anonymity ;)
dr|z3d
(and you get to read backlog when you are online, if you want that)
dr|z3d
online/at keyboard.
joan
is that like RUN DMC? XD
dr|z3d
the same :)
dr|z3d
your irc client -> znc -> persistent connection to i2p irc tunnel
joan
To clarify my dumb thing i did before, I would ACCEPT the ports in the firewall, when the logs would flood with messages i2p was being blocked, so a few months ago i2p was fine. Then there must have been an update to i2p that involves not flooding my logs and so I completely forgot to ACCEPT and so yeah, bad result. So glad you and RN jogged my memory on that.
dr|z3d
given what you've outlined, you're probably better off without laptop mode.
dr|z3d
at least then you don't need to futz with port forwarding every time you go out and return.
joan
thanks but no, i have no issue now. i am working on a system to automate this. between other things that are more urgent.
joan
is there an api to get/set settings in i2p?
dr|z3d
up to you. you could probably grep the current port from the router.config and update your firewall rules that way, and remove the previous rule.
dr|z3d
yeah. the api is your text editor :)
joan
neat yeah thought so.
joan
:)
RN
there is jsonrpc
RN
depending what stat or setting you want to get
RN
supposed to be able to change settings to, but I never dug far enough to check that out
RN
example use on eyedeekay's site graphical-monitoring
RN
I should give him updated versions of my modified files for conky
joan
i'll keep jsonrpc in mind
joan
thanks
dr|z3d
grep "^i2np.udp.port=" ~/.i2p/router.config | sed 's/i2np.udp.port=//'
dr|z3d
that command will return the port number.
RN
assuming one hasn't deviated from the default and set the tcp and udp to different ports
dr|z3d
wash and repeat for any other keys required. :)
joan
yes, yes, i need to determine i bunch of things before i automate tinkering w the firewall though
joan
on another topic
joan
is there anything for ntp over i2p?
joan
i'll take crickets as a "not yet", and that's fine. i remeber reading about it in some list of things that might be nice for i2p but i cant find the page. i think it was on i2p-projekt somewhere...
cumlord
we found some ntp servers in i2p, i think some people might do this for their own use
RN
might still be old ones... didn't match up to any named ones?
dr|z3d
we have a whois server, courtesy of Stormy. whois.stormycloud.i2p
joan
thanks cumlord, so nothing quite at the level that i should use/recommend. That's ok. Time is a tricky one afaik.
joan
Thanks all!
cumlord
don’t think so no
cumlord
might be a useful thing to host though
