GalaxyNova
I'm so sick that 90% of websites use cloudflare :/
GalaxyNova
if there's a cloudflare outage you might as well consider the whole internet outage
term99
thats people for yeah, they offer some decent services but not conducive to privacy in anyway
mesh
GalaxyNova: it shouldn't matter to you
mesh
you should assume *every* other website out there is hostile and tracking you
GalaxyNova
that's why recently I've been using a tor proxy and a plethora of different anti fingerprinting extensions to try to stop this
mesh
GalaxyNova: great :)
mesh
though the fundamental problem is and always will be the total disaster that is http + javascript + modern browsers
mesh
as we've seen all the anti fingerprinting and browser "hardening" in the world doesn't really work
GalaxyNova
javascript is the bane of my existance
GalaxyNova
i try to use noscript as much as i can but a large majority of websites rely on it to even load
mesh
we need to abandon browsers and javascript. develop protocols and applications that do not rely on this stuff
GalaxyNova
gemini is a step in the right direction
mesh
GalaxyNova: yeah javascript is the greatest threat to human freedom since the nazis
GalaxyNova
it's probably possible to use it over i2p too
mesh
gemini is a step in the right direction though I'm not a fan of many of their decisions
mesh
in the short term I say bring back gopher
RN
mesh, do you also want to bring fidonet back to popularity?
mesh
no, but nntp could be useful
GalaxyNova
mesh: gopher is pretty nice
GalaxyNova
sadly it doesn't support inline images afaik
mesh
neither, strangely enough, does irc
GalaxyNova
well you see irc is different ;)
mesh
it raises the question of whether people really want modern protocols that can do inline images
RN
yes. people tend to respond well when there are xmpp servers running in I2P
mesh
do they really
RN
with the ability to put pics and such in chat is like sms chat on a phone
mesh
that's interesting to know
RN
but there is the issue of trolls and what they might paste in
GalaxyNova
i can see how that would be a problem
mesh
yeah problems will always be with servers like postman that are open to the world
mesh
though it's interesting that most sites these days are +v and make you apply for membership in order to speak
mesh
err most irc chans
mesh
it's an itneresting use case of irc that anybody can read but only valid members can speak
GalaxyNova
somewhat related: how does banning on an i2p irc server work? can't they just wait 10 minutes for their tunnels to expire and then just rejoin?
mesh
you can't ban by Destination, Destinations are cheap to create
mesh
but that's why there's the whole system with nickserv and +v
RN
yes moderated mode does stop the trolling, but requires ops to be available and attentive to voicing everyone but the troll
RN
I remember one summer we had issues with a troll and their spambots.. that's when the strategies that work bubbled up to our attention.
