I think it may have been broken before then, or I had stale code. either way, I've got it working with java 21.

I did a big pass thru it Jan. '24 to update to gradle 8.5, dunno if you pulled that, it was the last time I looked at it probably

well, it's now fully gradle8 compliant, but I'm not even sure what that means. gradle --version reports 4.4.1

c54ec4d45847e22b70d559ec2f37fbf37945d219 was my big rework from 5 to 8. we only ship gradlew, not gradle
