just an idea. fork 4, keep our own repo, hack on it.

knock yourself out. 4 is 13 years old and horribly fugly on linux. we switched to 5 for a reason

Ack, it's relatively straightforward to set up as long as I don't have to build it myself in the CI pipeline

4 works ok for me, better now it's got pack200 baked in, 5 was always hit and miss for me, universal installer never worked properly on all platforms.
